Player Walkthrough for Fifth Edition Games

Table of Contents

The Journal

The Journal is where all of the dice rolls, messages, and major events in a given session are recorded in Alchemy. It's situated in the top left of the Alchemy game view for players, in the first panel. When everyone leaves the session, the Journal clears and is ready for your next session.

Messaging

To message the entire party, type the text you wish to send and press send (or press Enter).

Whispering

If you'd like to send a player or the Game Master a secret message, select their name in the party panel (upper right), then select "whisper." Your Journal text box will fill with the appropriate command and you can send your message in secret. Whispered messages will be highlighted gold.

Alternatively, you can use the following syntax:

/w ([username]) [message]

or

/whisper ([username]) [message]

Detail View

You can get further details about dice rolls or spells cast by clicking their journal entries. This applies to spells, checks and saves and attacks.

Roll Commands

If a spell or attack includes a command, such as a saving throw, clicking the journal entry that shows that saving throw and its DC will automatically roll the save for you.

Rolling dice using /roll

Our dice engine has an incredibly robust set of options. In order to roll a die or dice using /roll, simply follow the command with a space, [quantity of dice]d[type of dice], i.e. "/roll 2d20" and press enter.

For more information on rolling dice, read our Dice Rolling Guide.

Notes

The Notes panel is found in the second panel in the top left. To navigate to it, select the second gold pip in the top left of the app.

Here, all of your notes persist throughout your campaign, so as long as you're a part of the game, your notes will live on.

Actions

Your actions, like attacks, live in the Actions panel, found in the bottom left of the app, in the first pane.

There are two primary ways to interact with actions already created: Roll and Edit. When a player selects an action, above the bottom center button, you can select either.

For information about creating custom actions, see this article.

Roll

To roll an action after selecting it, select "ROLL". If you'd like to roll with advantage or disadvantage, click and hold "ROLL", then drag up and release for advantage, or down and release for disadvantage.

Edit

A player can edit any actions already made by selecting "EDIT". This will open up the modal that enables changing the action as needed. For more information about creating actions, see this guide.

Spells

The Spells panel is found in the second pane in the bottom left area, where Actions are shown.

Note: if your character does not have spellcasting enabled in their character sheet, this panel will not appear. To enable spellcasting, open your character sheet by selecting your Avatar, then navigating to the Spells tab of the sheet.

Here, a player has everything they need to cast, track, and view their spells. When a player selects a spell, the options that appear in the bottom center are "CAST" and "VIEW".

Casting Spells

By clicking cast, the spell will be cast and it will appear in the journal. For advantage or disadvantage, click and hold "CAST", then drag up and release for advantage, or drag down and release for disadvantage.

Once a spell is cast and it appears in the journal, any players, spectators, or the Game Master can click the spell to see more details.

If the spell requires someone make a saving throw, a card will appear in the journal. Anyone who clicks that card will automatically roll that save.

Spell Details

To view the details of a spell, select the spell and then select "VIEW" in the bottom-center of the app. This will pull up the details of the spell.

Managing Spell Slots

Directly below the Level Header (1st, 2nd, etc) is a section for spell slots. These are not automatically filled in; clicking the circles in the spell slots section will fill them in so that you can keep track of the spell slots you have remaining for each level.

Adding and Removing Spells

To manage the spells in your character sheet, scroll to the bottom of your spells panel and select "MANAGE SPELLS". This will open your character sheet to the spells tab, where you can add and removes spells and spell slots, and create custom spells.

Skills and Abilities

The Skills and Abilities panel is found in the bottom left of the app, as the second pane if you do not have spellcasting enabled, and the third panel if your character is a spellcaster with spellcasting enabled.

Rolling Ability Checks and Saving Throws

Your character's abilities are found on the left side of the Skills & Abilities panel. To roll a Check or Saving Throw, select the ability you'd like to use and click "CHECK" or "SAVE" in the bottom-center of the app.

To roll a check or save with advantage or disadvantage, click and hold the respective button and drag up and release for advantage or drag down and release for disadvantage.

Rolling Skill Checks

Your skills are found to the right of the abilities, in the bottom left of the app. If your character is proficient in a skill, the dot to the left of the name of the skill will be filled in. Otherwise, it will be hollow.

To roll a skill check, select the skill and click "CHECK" in the bottom-center of the app. To roll a skill check for advantage or disadvantage, click and hold the respective button and drag up and release for advantage or drag down and release for disadvantage.

Adding Proficiency, Expertise, and Other Bonuses to Skills

Sometimes a character is particularly adept at a skill. To add the appropriate bonuses, select the skill you wish to edit and select "VIEW" in the bottom-center of the app. A modal will appear that allows you to view and edit the skill. To add Proficiency, activate the slider next to Proficiency. If your character has expertise in that skill, after adding proficiency, you will be able to add proficiency by activating the Expertise slider.

If your character has other bonuses for a skill, there is a place for you to manually input additional bonuses. Use the (-) and (+) buttons to remove/add bonuses, or type the number into the field between the two buttons.

Equipment, Items, and Currency

The equipment panel, which contains all your currency, items, and equipment, is the last panel (farthest right) in the bottom left area of the app. It contains all the details of your monies, items, and equipment.

Currency

At the top of the Equipment panel is the currency. For Fifth Edition (5e), the currencies, from left to right, are: Copper, Silver, Electrum, Gold, and Platinum.

To adjust the currency in your inventory, select the currency and either drag the slider to the appropriate number, or type the number into the box above the slider.

Note: To save your changes, click the white button with a checkmark after making adjustments to your currency.

Items and Equipment

Your items and equipment are below the currency area of the Equipment panel. If the dot to the far right of the item is filled in, that signifies that the item is equipped. To equip an item or equipment, select the item, then select "EQUIP" in the bottom-center of the app.

Note: Equipped items do not presently adjust your stats (i.e. your Armor Class), but they will in the future. For now, make sure you're making the adjustments to your character sheet as items are equipped.

To add or remove items to your character sheet, select "ADD ITEM" at the bottom of the equipment panel. This will open up a list of all equipment that is connected to the game you're playing in. Check with your GM to ensure that what you're adding to your character sheet is appropriate for the campaign and your character.

The Party Panel

The Party Panel is the first panel shown in the upper right of the app. It shows all of the participants in a game, including the Game Master.

Marking Yourself as Away

While online, each participant has an indicator in the form of a colored dot in the bottom right of their avatar. Green means they're online. If it's yellow, they're away. If it's not colored/grey, they're offline.

To adjust your indicator, select your avatar and, in the bottom-center of the app, you'll be able to select "AWAY" or "HERE" depending on your present indication.

Setting your Status

You can create a status for yourself that will display in place of your username, below your character name, by selecting yourself in the party panel and clicking "STATUS" in the bottom-center of the app. Type in your status and save it by clicking the white button with a checkmark in the bottom-center of the app.

Character and GM Details

You can view details that others have made public about their character by selecting their avatar in the top right, then selecting "VIEW" in the bottom-center of the app. If a player has made their backstory public, you'll see information about the character additional to the appearance information from their character sheet.

NPC/Encounter View

The NPC Panel is the second panel in the top-right of the app, next to the Party panel. This panel also serves as the Encounter Panel while in Initiative.

Here, you'll see any Non-Player Characters (NPCs) that the GM has made visible to you.

In an encounter, this panel will show all characters, NPC and Players, that are a part of combat, the order of initiative, and the duration of the current turn, in minutes.

Handouts

Handouts that your GM has shared with you appear in the Handouts panel, in the bottom-right of the app. To view a handout, select the handout and click "VIEW". This will bring up the handout and any additional information about the handout.

If the handout expands to full screen, you can interact with the handout by clicking and dragging, panning, or zooming to see different parts of the handout.

Books

If you have uploaded books into your Library, they will appear in the books tab, in the bottom right of the app. Selecting a book cover will open the book in a PDF Viewer.

Your Character Sheet

The character sheet is the center of the Player's game. To access the character sheet, click your avatar in the center of the screen. There, you'll be able to adjust all of your stats, spells, features, descriptions and any notes about your character. For more information on creating your character and adjusting your character sheet, see our guide on character creation.

Adjusting your Experience and Hit Points (HP)

Experience and Hit Points are easily adjustable in Alchemy. To adjust your hit points, select your HP bar, to the right of your avatar, and drag the slider, use the (-) or (+) buttons, or type in the change in your hit points (i.e. -3 or 4), then click the white button with the checkmark in the bottom center of the app.
